Frequently Asked Questions

How do stacked (compound) discounts work?โ–ผ

Stacked discounts are applied sequentially, not added together. A 30% discount followed by an additional 20% discount does NOT equal 50% off. First, 30% is taken off the original price, then 20% is taken off the already-reduced price: 0.7 ร— 0.8 = 0.56, meaning you pay 56% of the original โ€” a 44% total discount.

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?โ–ผ

Use the 'Calculate Original Price' mode. If you know the sale price and the discount rate, the original price = sale price / (1 - discount rate). For example, if an item is $60 after a 25% discount: $60 / (1 - 0.25) = $60 / 0.75 = $80 original price.

What is the difference between 'discount rate' and 'markup'?โ–ผ

Discount rate is the percentage reduced from the original (selling) price. Markup is the percentage added above the cost (purchase) price. They produce different numbers: a $50 cost item sold at $100 has a 100% markup but a 50% discount returns it to cost. Retailers use markup for pricing; consumers see discount rates in sales.
